Wood project for the absolute total non woodworker

A bit of irony. When I shot my year-end video and mentioned that I have yet to make my chess pieces, it was before Christmas. What did I receive on Christmas morning? A set of hand-made chess pieces!

My son and I play a game of chess nearly every morning and have been using a glass set with a few broken pieces for quite some time now. About a month ago, my wife decided to buy us a new set but after a bit of sticker-shock, decided to make a set.

Its pretty cool. She went to a craft store, picked up a variety of wooden spools and balls, and glued them into various configurations for the pieces.

Even without any tools, anyone can make creative projects with wood.

Project Update The Bride Receives Her Wedding Present

Hi Everyone,

It was an absolutely beautiful day here in Minnesota. The weather could not have been more perfect. And it was a big day for a young friend of mine who got married several weeks ago--I finished the wedding present bowl and my husband and I gave it to her. She was very happy to receive it and it will serve her well for years to come.

Stenciling Great For Any Home Decorating Project

Stenciling is one of the most popular trends in home decorating these days. Not only because it is fun and easy to do but also it is limitless when it comes to using ones creative imagination. Anyone can actually do stenciling, as long as he or she has good imagination and knows how to follow simple instructions. Now, if you think you have that creative skill in you, why not choose stencil designs for your home decorating project? Take note, you dont have to be an artist to create really cool designs on your walls and furniture. All you need is time, effort, patience, resources, and of course creativity to make your home decorating project a success.

First off, ask yourself, where do you want to use the stencil design? Is it for your walls? For your furniture? For glass such as your mirrors and windows? Or for all mentioned? If it is for your walls, you have to make sure that the color you choose for your stencils will match that of the wall. You can make use large patterns or repeat the same pattern over and over, as long as the effect on your wall is great. Now, if it is for glass, you have to carefully consider the paint that youll use. Keep in mind that there are paints which are easily washed off. For sure, you dont want to lose that paint overnight. So, make sure that you get the one that lasts on glass material.

Second, there are lots of options as far as patterns and designs are concerned. So, before making any purchase, see to it that you already have a plan in mind. Answer these questions, "What do I want for my home decorating project? Do I want to make it more personalized? Or do I simply want it to be just like any other home?" When you go to craft shops and home improvement stores or if you go online, you can find patterns and designs which are often used in home decorating projects. However, these are not personalized; so if you really want to be unique, might as well create your own stencil designs. By simply using a pattern from a wallpaper or drapery fabric that you chose for your room, you can trace it and create your own design.

Lastly, get stencil design ideas from home improvement magazines, books, and online. This step will help you a lot in determining which will look best for your kids room, living room, dining, kitchen, and even the study room. Design ideas can range from small pictures, body size pictures, and words or famous quotes.

Stenciling is really great for any home decorating project. Although it is fun and easy to do, still it is important that you do a little planning and preparation to make it successful. And to ensure great results, why not do a little research first to enhance your knowledge about stenciling? Through research, you will learn the right paint to use, the kinds of brushes, and of course the correct choice of transferring the design. And if you know someone who has knowledge about stenciling, your neighbor for example, ask for advice or tips.

Youll see, by doing all these, you are off to giving your home the look that you and your family will surely love.

Recent Obessions Greek Key Project Sneak Peak

While the Greek Key is in no way a new pattern, recently Ive become obsessed with it! I think it is great because it is incredibly versatile.

It can be scaled down to coordinate perfectly with larger patterns.

Or can easily be enlarged to add a punch of contrast to a room.

Or add subtle detail with low contrast by painting the same or a similar color.

Simple Project Paper Towel Holder Part II

In part one I discussed the design, layout and cutting of the brackets for this simple paper towel holder. Now lets look at how I finished the project.

After cutting and shaping the second bracket, using the first as a pattern, I started on the base. Because of the way this holder is mounted under the cabinet (the cabinet bottom is actually recessed) the base will not be readily visible. So nothing fancy here - just a board with two dados to hold the brackets.

Dados are like grooves, except they run cross grain, while grooves run parallel to the grain. There are many ways of making these by hand. I decide to do a side-by-side (literally) comparison of two of these ways: knife, chisel, and router plane; and dado plane.

After laying out the dado with the square and marking knife, I used the router plane to mark the final depth of the dado. Of course, you could do this with a marking gauge etc. but I find this a convenient shortcut.

The next step is just zipping out the waste with the chisel. As shown, I started with the chisel bevel up, and then switched to bevel down action. There are two things to watch out for here. First, you need to be careful to avoid tearout on the far edge of the board. I do this by either cutting a small ramp with knife and chisel, or avoiding the issue entirely by working in from both edges. You also need to be careful to keep the chisel (and your arms and body) moving in a straight line. If you pivot or arch your stroke to either side, the chisel will dig into the sides of the dado and cause tearout. I find short, almost "jabby" strokes work better than long smooth ones in most cases - which somehow seems counterintuitive... Also, the knife lines will need to be redone as the dado deepens.

After getting close with the chisel, I switched to the router plane to clean things up and insure a flat, level bottom. I prefer the spear point cutter, but a square one works too.

For the second dado, I used a tool made specifically for the job. The dado plane combines the abilities of all the tools used on the first dado. It has dual nickers that knife the cross grain fibers to avoid tearout. It has a skewed iron that cleanly removes the wood between the knifed lines. And it has an adjustable depth stop to create a smooth and level bottom in the dado.

All the assistance it requires is a small batten attached to the board to guide it. Since I knew that the holes wouldnt show, I just nailed the batten to the board. If you wanted to avoid that, you could clamp it. Once the batten was in place, it was easy to plane the dado.

Both methods worked fine, but using the dado plane was easier (once it was properly adjusted) and produced a cleaner dado. Heres a shot of the test fit and a close-up of the dado joint made with the plane.

Once the brackets were nailed and glued into the dados, it was time to work on the rod that actually holds the roll of towels. I selected a piece of 2x stock with straight grain and using a hatchet and maul, split off a section.

Taking the billet over to the shavehorse I use a drawknife to square it up...

...then I created an octagon...

...and finally, using a concave spokeshave, changed this into a cylindrical rod.

After rounding the rod ends by cutting facets with the drawknife, it was time to hang the finished holder from the bottom of the cabinet. A huge improvement in my opinion. Where before I managed to avoid noticing the junky plastic holder, I now enjoy noticing and appreciating the new wooden holder. Sometimes small things are big changes.
